Shiatsu Therapy

Shiatsu is based on an ancient acupuncture technique by using fingers, hands, elbows, forearms & feet, to significantly stimulate KI, the body’s vital life force.

Shiatsu: literally meaning ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, this healing modality is based on the acupuncture system by using fingers, hands, elbows, forearms and feet, rather than needles, to stimulate KI, the body’s vital life force.

  • Restore and maintain the body’s chi/life force, and improves circulation which is specially helpful to those suffering from fatigue and overall weakness.
  • Reduces stress and tension as well as anxiety, depression and insomnia.
  • Reduces problems with stiff neck and shoulders as well as backaches (including sciatica).
  • Promotes healing from sprains and similar injuries, & helps bring relief to arthritis sufferers.
  • Relief from headaches, coughs, colds, and other sinus and respiratory problems

Developed in Japan, shiatsu is a finger-pressure technique utilizing traditional acupuncture points. Similar to acupressure, shiatsu concentrates on unblocking the flow of vital force and restoring balance in the meridians and organs in order to promote self-healing.

The name of the vital force in Chinese is called, CHI and in Japanese is called KI. This vital force flows along connected energetic pathways called meridians, which in turn are connected to organs or a psychophysical function. When we are healthy, this Chi or Ki flows without interruption. Injury, disease, poor diet, lack of movement, and stress are just a few of the causes of impeded Chi or Ki flow.

With the client reclining, the practitioner applies pressure with the finger, thumb, palm, elbow, or knee to specific zones on the skin located along the chi/ki meridians. Shiatsu brings about a sense of relaxation while stimulating blood and lymphatic flow. The benefits of shiatsu may include pain relief and a strengthening of the body’s resistance to disease and disorder.
